I've never had the privilege of traveling to Israel but a friend of mine goes there frequently. She graciously sent me several photographs and each one seems incredibly special to me. This is a view of the Hadassah Hospital at Ein Kerem (which is famous for the stained glass windows Marc Chagall donated.) I love the swift, spontaneous strokes, especially the light on the steps.

Evening Rhythms

There's a story that goes with this one. I have some very special photos of the Blanco Basin up in Colorado taken 15 years ago. There was one moment that has enthralled me ever since then, which is only hinted at in one of the photos, but when it came time to do this little piece I managed to catch that color. I simply had to stop once I had put down a few strokes on the mountains. More would not have made it better!

Summer Shadows

Memory paintings can be so much fun! The challenge is to look at a photo for 5 minutes, memorizing and analyzing it, before putting the photo away and simply painting what you recall. This is pretty familiar territory to me, since the view is one I often see near my home. That's Sandia poking her head into the shadows and the city of Albuquerque looks like a pueblo scattered off in the distance. Romanticized? Yeah. I like to paint that way.

Spring Pink

Western New York knows how to throw a springtime, pink-themed party! This view was behind my in-laws condo, begging to be painted. The lively strokes seem to describe the jazzy, fun blossoms pretty well. The turquoise shadows add a nice bit of punctuation, too. Blue On Blue

The lovely texture of the Colourfix paper gives an interesting look to this lively sky. Loose, free and expressive, the blues showcase the rich pink at the skyline, and the yellow and lavender in the clouds and sky. Perhaps my favorite part, however, is the subtle grayed-violet along the very bottom, with touches of red-violet. Small (and hard to capture with a camera) but significant.

Deep Shadows

We painted one morning in a friend's backyard overlooking the Ortiz Mountains. Her adobe wall and rocky steps invited this composition. I infrequently paint a piece entirely on location, but this is one of the exceptions. The brilliant sunshine cast deep shadows. This is a very special and somewhat unique painting, with a crisp quality that I particularly like. I hope you do, too!

I painted a series of this image, challenging myself to be creative with the color. I had a cartoon that I used repeatedly, but I allowed myself to be creative in all other aspects. Winter Joy

The beauty of these flowers in the dark of winter just gave me a lot of joy, and I think my strokes expressed that well. It needed a bit of blue sky to lift the day, too. It's painted on Schmincke Sansfix, which is charcoal gray, giving the white flower a neat texture that I really love. This one will add some light and happiness to a corner in your room, I think.

Deep Green Acequia

In the mid-1980s we lived in a beautiful spot in Albuquerque's North Valley, raising dogs, horses and our kiddo. Little acequias (ditches) run all over the area and this one cut through our back yard, literally bisecting the property, giving us miles of convenient trails where we rode our horses. The painting was done many years later, but I have to admit that I brought a lot of the memories I have of the lush green of summer to it. It's painted on a piece of Schmincke Sansfix, which is dark gray and highly textured, lending some lovely accents to the painting.

A Little Rain

Another painting done with PanPastels on canary yellow Pastelmat. It's not your eyes or the focus, that cloud is soft, almost blurry, on purpose. I see this kind of view so often here in New Mexico, a singular cloud looming over the mountains, drifting a bit of rain down, while it remains hot and sunny where I am. Favorite part: the color of the road! I love the not-gray, sandy dirt.

Sandia Shadows

This is the view looking south from Placitas, which is perched high on the northern shoulder of the Sandia range. The morning shadows gave me a chance to play with some of the colors there, in cool purples and blues, while the sunlit foreground is softly sculpted, punctuated by the juniper and pinon bushes. But it's the warm and cool colors on the mountain peak that catch my eye. I love the mountain with all its colors and moods.

Frosty Glow

Could be anywhere, but the photo was one taken in England! I adore the blue-pink-yellow snow. I think the tracks were the most fun to paint. There are times when the shade can be so very colorful. I was totally enthralled by the vivid colors I saw in the trees and grasses, contre jour. Back lighting can really dazzle the eye unless you're painting full in the shade, as I was in this lovely canyon up in the Jemez Mountains near Los Alamos. People often ask me if I "really see" these colors, and although I can't claim to have literally seen all the red-violet, rust, turquoise, and blue-violet colors amid the greens, I can say that I sensed them there. In other words, they belong. This is a very special painting. I hope you like it!

Another of my PanPastel on Pastelmat demonstrations from the pastel convention this year. I played with the gorgeous grays, layering together all kinds of colors before mixing in the Pan grays. I loved catching that sunlit rain falling over the mesas--so frequent here in New Mexico! The contrast of the purples and blue-greens amid the clouds and the red-violets and yellow-greens in the land particularly please me. This one will look terrific in a plein air style dark frame with a gold fillet, I think.

I painted from a shot that my friend Jeanine took on a trip to Colorado recently, somewhat edited, of course. I like the long, tall thin format, accentuating the height of the trees.

The deep Ludwig eggplant purples and maroons in the rock shadows just don't show up well in the photograph, but they add lovely deep notes to the painting. The strong S-curve is accentuated by the contrasting shadowy rocks. I'm totally in love with the colors and strokes in the big round boulder on the left-hand side. This is a small but bold piece that would bring drama to a room.

I had to laugh when I thought of this title. My husband chuckled at me when I looked up at some looming gray clouds and mused, "Ah, more of those gray beauties..." I love gray! I love making beautiful grays. This was another of the PanPastel demos done at the last IAPS (International Association of Pastel Societies) convention, this time on soft yellow Pastelmat paper. The swing and sway of the sky shape intrigued me, too.

The night can be colorful! I love to examine the colors in low light conditions, memorizing what I can see so that I'll be able to paint it later. It means you have to get away from the lights for a long enough time that you can see in the dark, but slowly the colors come into view, especially on a moonlit night. This was a demo I did at the International Association of Pastel Societies Convention in June, using PanPastels on Pastelmat paper. I love this combo--the Pans are so sheer, quick. soft yet lively, and the Pastelmat paper is PERFECT for them! The view is of the Sangre de Christo Mountains near Santa Fe, with a summer thunderhead building into a storm overhead. Nothing is much more spectacular in the New Mexico summer sky, and this is one of my specialties. Hope you love it, like I do!

It was a cool, slightly overcast early fall day when we went out on location to paint along the acequia (translation: ditch) in the north valley in Albuquerque. These lovely, delicate yellow flowers were so attractive against the reflections in the water. I always enjoy the way our slightly reddish water reflects the blue, blue sky, making these incredible purple, red-violet, blue-violet reflections, but on an overcast day, when the moisture is trapped under the dome of clouds, the colors just *pop*! Some view this as flowers against water, some see them against the sky, and in essence both are true...

The space around this hand lends it a solitary feeling, as if the one making an offering is not seen. Jesus said

Using PanPastels gives a painting a lovely sense of air and a slightly softer focus. Romantic, in a way. I enjoyed painting this familiar subject with them.The image size is actually about 8 1/2" x 11", since I cut a piece of Pastelmat paper as an experiment on this one. If you know Bernalillo, this is a view looking north from Coronado State Park.

Bosque del Apache is an amazingly beautiful place. Famous for its bird sanctuary, I find the colors there to be even more breathtaking, especially on a wild fall morning with a storm brewing overhead. This one was painted with PanPastels, giving it a softer, more painterly feel that expresses the contrasts of the place and the day ell. (Unlike most of my pastels, where I tape around the edge so that the dimension you see is the paper size, not the image size, this one was painted right out to the edges of the paper. It could be floated on a back mat nicely.)

If you take a drive up toward the Jemez Mountains from Albuquerque you'll come upon a series of mesas that punctuate the area, often glowing with the reddish tones of the earth in that area. This painting was a cloud demonstration, and while I enjoy the softness of the floating clouds, the light and shadow on the mesa stole the show!

There's a lovely mountainside park at the foot of the Sandias, bordering the far eastern edge of Albuquerque, the Elena Gallegos Picnic Area. At sunset the mountains turn a famous watermelon color and the surrounding landscape takes on a lovely rosy hue, as well. These shadows intrigued me along the well worn pathway we walked, as did the watermelon-tipped grasses. A very special spot to go, if you ever visit our city!

It has such beautiful colors! I painted it from a tiny part of a snapshot of Santa Fe, but I loved the light and shapes in it. (I'm sorry for the incredibly boring title. I run dry sometimes.)
